Krusader installation instructions for KDE 4.x

Krusader-SVN development download
---------------------------------
Krusader is developed in KDE Extragear.
Download the latest available Krusader-2.x sourcecode with subversion.

Supported Platforms

* All POSIX (Linux®/BSD/UNIX®-like OSes), Solaris™

* Tested on Mac® OS X 10.4 "Tiger" on ppc, should work on all versions and
  architectures supported by KDE.
* Tested on Windows XP® with KDE 4.1.2, not yet tested on Windows Vista® but it should work.


Installation on Linux® and BSD platforms

Krusader dependencies
---------------------
The next pacakeg are needed when running the Krusader binary.
The next packages are the names that Debian/Ubuntu uses, other Linux
distros will probably use similar names.

- kdebase-runtime     runtime components from the official KDE 4 release
- kdelibs5            core libraries for all KDE 4 applications
- libc6               GNU C Library: Shared libraries
- libgcc1             GCC support library
- libqt4-dbus         Qt 4 D-Bus module
- libqt4-xml          Qt 4 XML module

Compilation requirements
------------------------
The next packages are needed for compiling the Krusader sourcecode, 
if you only run the Krusader binary you don't need to install these packages.

- gcc                    The GNU C compiler
- g++                    The GNU C++ compiler
- cmake                  A cross-platform, open-source make system
- zlib1g-dev             library for implementing the deflate compression method found in gzip and PKZIP
- gettext                GNU Internationalization utilities
- kdelibs5-dev           development files for the KDE 4 core libraries
- libkonq5-dev           development files for the Konqueror libraries 
- libphonon-dev          libphonon-dev cross-platform multimedia framework development


cmake options
-------------
-DQT_INCLUDES=/usr/share/qt4/include
 is the location of the QT4 includes

-DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/usr/
 is the location where Krusader will be installed with the make command.
 An other example is: -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PRFIX=/opt/krusader
 to install the compiled Krusader in an other directory to not overwrite
 the Krusader version installed by your package manager. 


$ tar -xzvf krusader_kde4.tar.gz
$ cd krusader_kde4
$ cmake  -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/usr/ -DQT_INCLUDES=/usr/share/qt4/include


Known cmake trouble and fixes
-----------------------------
We had a problem with cmake-2.4 on (K)ubuntu 8.04 and probably other distro's as well.

CMake Error: CPack welcome resource file:
"/usr/share/cmake/Templates/CPack.GenericWelcome.txt" could not be found.
------------
To fix the error:
$ sudo mkdir /usr/share/cmake/
$ sudo ln -s /usr/share/cmake-2.4/Templates /usr/share/cmake/Templates

This bug is fixed in (K)ubuntu 8.10



Compilation and installation
----------------------------
Compilation will take about 5 to 10 minutes depending on your CPU speed.

$ make
$ su -c "make install"
or 
$ sudo make install


Uninstall
---------
$ su -c "make uninstall"
or
$ sudo make uninstall



Compilation and installation on BSD
===================================
$ cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=`kde4-config --prefix` -DCMAKE_DQT_INCLUDES=`kde4-config --qt-libraries`
$ gmake

Then, su to root, and install.
$ gmake install

For uninstalling, run in the sourcecode directory the next command.
# gmake uninstall



Installation on Mac® OS X
=========================
With KDE-4 Krusader runs natively on Mac OS X, using it's Aqua user interface
(No more X11 needed!).

Install the required libs and tools
-----------------------------------
Install MacPorts from http://www.macports.org/
Since Mac OS X doesn't ship a compiler by default any more, you have to
install Apple's XCode to get gcc. All this is described in the MacPorts
Guide at http://guide.macports.org/

At the time of this writing MacPorts does not install Qt4 with ssl support
by default. A ticket for this is already filed at
http://trac.macports.org/ticket/17730
For now, you have to install Qt4 manualy with ssl:
$ sudo port install qt4-mac +ssl

Now you can install KDE-4's libraries and all it's dependencies with a
simeple command:
$ sudo port install kdelibs4

If you don't want to do all the compiling, you can see if there are recent
binaries at http://mac.kde.org/ The kde-4.1.3 release as also build with
MacPorts.


Build Krusader using GNU make
-----------------------------
Now you can proceed with the standard unix build process for Krusader. Note
that we create a build directory with the suffix ".build" for the compiled
objects. This tells Spotlight not to index the content of this directory.

$ tar -xzvf krusader_kde4.tar.gz
$ mkdir krusader.build
$ cd krusader.build
$ cmake ../krusader_kde4 -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/opt/local/
$ make
$ sudo make install

Now you should have a working Krusader.app inside /opt/local/bin.
See below how to create a relocatable aplication bundle.

Build Krusader using XCode
--------------------------
An other method is to use Apple's IDE XCode to build Krusader.
You have to install the Apple Developer Tools and change the commands above to:

$ tar -xzvf krusader_kde4.tar.gz
$ mkdir krusader_xcode
$ cd krusader_xcode
$ cmake ../krusader_kde4 -G Xcode
$ open Project.xcodeproj

Please consult the XCode manual for details about how to proceed.
Any feedback is wellcome, since we have no XCode guru in our Krusader development team ;-)

Create a relocatable application bundle
---------------------------------------
To create a Krusader.app which has all resources embedded (like icons and stuff)
tell cmake to use an empty directory as installation prefix, let's say /opt/tmp.
Now build and install Krusader normaly, which should result in a /opt/tmp/share/
directory. Move this dir into Krusader.app:

$ mv /opt/tmp/share /opt/tmp/bin/Krusader.app/Contents/

As of KDE-4.1 Krusader.app should find it's resources this way as
"<self>.app/Contents/" is added as possible KDEDIR. If you really need an older
version of KDE-4, you have to use a wrapper script as described a mail from
Jonas Bähr to the kde-mac mailing list on 3 February 2008.

We hope to integrate this resource bundling into the normal build process for
future versions.



Installation on Windows®
========================

At moment of Writing Krusader is not available yet in the KDE-Win installer.

Krusader compiles on Windows®,
but some development work needs to be done to make it more usable on the Windows® platform.
All feedback is welcome!

- Install KDE for Windows with the kdewin-installer from 
  http://winkde.org/pub/kde/ports/win32/installer/
  We have used kdewin-installer-gui-0.9.3-3.exe
  See also at http://windows.kde.org/ if needed

  During the kdewin installation, choose the following options:
  + installation path c:\kde4
  + Select KDE 4.1.2
    (We have encountered Krusader compile troubles with KDE 4.1.3 ,
     but AFAIK they are not caused by the Krusader sourcecode)
  + install mode: developer installation
  + compiler mode: mingw
  + select installation of binary and developement files of the following
    packages (Note that some packages are not in any category and one
    needs to view all to find them):
    * mingw
    * gcc (including g++)
    * cmake
    * dbus
    * qt4
    * kdelibs
    * kdebase
    * automoc4 (including the source package - because of a automoc4 bug at this moment)
    * gettext-tools  

- When KDE 4.1.2 is installed png2ico.exe should be already installed in c:\kde4\bin
  In the case that png2ico.exe is not installed, than install it manually in c:\kde4\bin

  This programs is needed for icons  
  If png2ico.exe is not installed, Krusader will compile fine but it will miss the application icon.  

- Download the Krusader sourcecode
  
  You can also access the Krusader Git repository with TortoiseGit
  http://code.google.com/p/tortoisegit/

- Unpack the sourcecode into c:/kde4/src/krusader_kde4

- Create a Krusader build directory in c:/kde4/build/krusader_kde4
  Unpack the source code (again) into this directory
  This directory will be used to compile Krusader and to create all the
  compiled files and the krusader.exe file.

- Because of a bug (at least in the KDE 4.1.2 and KDE 4.1.3 installation) 
  you need to edit some files, otherwise Krusader will fail to compile.
  In the next files you need to replace "d:/kderoot" into "c:/kde4" when KDE4 is installed in c:\kde4
  The problem is that the kde4 directory is wrong hardcoded in several files.
  c:\KDE4\share\apps\cmake\modules\KDELibsDependencies.cmake
  c:\KDE4\share\apps\cmake\modules\KDELibsDependenciesInternal.cmake
  c:\KDE4\share\apps\cmake\modules\KDELibsDependenciesInternal.cmake.template
  c:\KDE4\share\apps\cmake\modules\KDEPimLibsDependencies.cmake
  c:\KDE4\share\apps\cmake\modules\KDEPimLibsDependencies.cmake.template
  The bug is also explained in:

- Because of an Automoc4 installation bug (at least in the KDE 4.1.2 and KDE 4.1.3 installation) 
  you need to todo the next, otherwise Krusader will fail to compile.
  - Create directory c:\kde4\lib\automoc4
  - Install the automoc4 source package if it's not installed (with the kdewin-installer)
    The automoc4 source package will be installed in c:\kde\src\
  - Copy Automoc4Config.cmake, Automoc4Version.cmake and automoc4.files.in (but NOT the file kde4automoc.cpp)
    into the new directory c:\kde4\lib\automoc4

- Open the Windows terminal (cmd.exe) and go to the build directory
  c:
  cd \kde4\build\krusader_kde4

- Run "cmake" in the Krusader build directory c:\kde4\build\krusader_kde4 with the following parameters:
  c:\kde4\bin\cmake.exe -G "MinGW Makefiles" c:/kde4/src/krusader_kde4 -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=c:/kde4 -DCMAKE_INCLUDE_PATH=c:/kde4/include -DCMAKE_LIBRARY_PATH=c:/kde4/lib -DKDEWIN_DIR:PATH=c:/kde4 -DCMAKE_PREFIX_PATH=c:/kde4;c:/MinGW -DKDE4_INSTALL_DIR=c:/kde4 -DQT_INSTALL_DIR=c:/kde4 -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Release

  Optional:
  If you want to use eclipse IDE, you may want to run instead:
  c:\kde4\bin\cmake.exe -G "Eclipse CDT4 - MinGW Makefiles" c:/krusader/src/krusader_kde4 -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=c:/kde4 -DCMAKE_INCLUDE_PATH=c:/kde4/include -DCMAKE_LIBRARY_PATH=c:/kde4/lib -DKDEWIN_DIR:PATH=c:/kde4 -DCMAKE_PREFIX_PATH=c:/kde4;c:/MinGW -DKDE4_INSTALL_DIR=c:/kde4 -DQT_INSTALL_DIR=c:/kde4 -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=debugfull
  and in Eclipse with C++ development tools 4 rigth click in the Project Explorer, choose Import...,
  select "General->Existing projects into workspace" and choose the c:/kde4/build/krusader_kde4 directory.
  
- Run "make install" in the Krusader build directory c:\kde4\build\krusader_kde4
  C:\MinGW\bin\mingw32-make.exe install
  Krusader will now be compiled, if compilation is succesfully the exe file will be installed in c:\kde4\bin\krusader.exe

- Run krusader.exe (or choose it from the start menu) and enjoy!

- Known problems on Windows at the moment (22 Oct 2008):
  + Archives don't work
  + The media button does not work (seems to be a problem in KDEwin libraries, it used to work)
  + Most external tools don't work
  + No support of "My Computer" yet (It is planned to be supported by kdelibs in the future)
  + Many useful kio slaves missing (KDE issue)
